Estimates of the numbers (and types) of genes encoded in the genomes of a cyanobacterium, of a nuclear genome and of plastid genomes of a number of species have become available from the determinations of the complete sequences of these genomes. The availability of this information provides a basis for reexamining the processes involved in the establishment of the eukaryotic habit and perhaps to consider why plastids have persisted.
