We have analyzed the occurence and evolution of the GOGAT enzyme in various algal groups. GOGAT in algae was compared to homologues in land plants. It was found that various algal groups, i.e. rhodophytes, phaeophyceae, raphidophyceae, chrysophyceae, contain at least two types of GOGAT that may be differentially expressed. We detected in algae a new GOGAT isoform that was not found in land plants and that may reside in the mitochondria. Based on these observations a model for the evolution of the GOGAT enzyme in algae and land plants is presented.
